Finding your way back to your intuition, and to your self, is truly a journey—especially if you’ve been really out of touch. (No judgement, we’ve all been there). It takes courage to listen to your inner knowing, but before you can even get to courage, you must find forgiveness.
You will never trust yourself if you don’t forgive yourself first. You’re only human. But we bet there’s ways you feel like you’ve let yourself down or things that you wish you’d done differently that are still weighing on you today.
Forgiveness isn’t easy, but once found nobody can take it away from you. Let’s forgive the person who needs it most today… little you. Find an old photograph of you and keep it near as you do this exercise. Don’t have one? Pick a memory or a moment frozen in time you remember from childhood. Take a minute to let any emotions come flooding back to you.
Now, write a letter to your inner child, that tiny girl or boy who got lost along the way. When was the last time you thought of them? When did you stop? If you really dig deep, does that younger you feel forgotten? Alone. Abandoned. Unloved. You are none of these things, but that little one inside doesn’t believe it. Not yet.
He or she needs a hug and a whole lot of love. Write down whatever comes to you: your wishes, your regrets, your mistakes, the ways you think you’ve let yourself down. Then end the letter with love. All the kind, caring words you wish you’d heard as a child, or just haven’t heard in a while.
The forgiveness may not come in one letter, or 12, but at the end of each, imagine a little you responding back, “I forgive you.” Because they do.
